Peter W. Buchbauer

Peter Buchbauer formed Buchbauer & McGuire, P.C. in April 1995. Prior to 1995, Peter was a principal in the firm of Swift & Buchbauer, P.C. and an associate in the firms of Douglas M. Swift, Jr., P.C. and Williams & Swift.

Peter has broad experience in civil, criminal and family law. For the better part of the past 10 years Peter has restricted his practice to family law, representing clients in all areas of family law, including marital dissolutions, child custody and visitation, property division, spousal support and adoptions. Peter is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (the only Fellow in the Northern Shenandoah Valley). He served as the Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar 2009 - 2010. He is a member of the Virginia Family Law Coalition, a group of family law practitioners who assist the Virginia General Assembly regarding matters of family law legislation.

Peter helped form Collaborative Professionals of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, a multi-disciplinary practice group bringing together lawyers, mental health professionals and financial specialists committed to helping families resolve their differences in a non-litigation dispute resolution method.

Peter brings his vast litigation experience and problem solving skills to the work performed for his clients.

In his spare time, Peter enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, domestic and international travel, and golf.

James J. McGuire

This Person

Jim McGuire has called the Northern Shenandoah Valley his home since 1993. Jim was born in Washington, D.C., on April 7, 1967. After growing up in Arlington and Reston, Virginia, he attended Radford University, in Radford, Virginia, where he studied criminal justice. Jim then attended Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated cum laude in 1993. He was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, a membership that recognizes students having attained excellence in the art of appellate advocacy.

In 1994 Jim began practicing law in Winchester, Virginia as an associate with the firm Swift and Buchbauer, P.C. The following year, Jim and his partner, Peter W. Buchbauer, formed the law offices of Buchbauer & McGuire, P.C. Jim’s practice focuses on all aspects of domestic relations litigation, including adoption, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, property division and divorce. Jim has also been qualified by the Virginia Supreme Court to serve as a guardian ad litem for children in child custody and social services cases. Jim represents injured clients in personal injury matters and those clients involved in civil litigation, real estate and contract disputes. Jim’s diverse practice includes defending clients charged with all traffic and criminal offenses (felonies and misdemeanors) as well as business entity formation.

Jim provides clients with well-reasoned creative solutions to their legal problems based upon his years of litigation experience. He regularly participates in professional development seminars and conferences to keep abreast of the most recent changes in the law.

Jim has strong ties to the Winchester-Frederick County community. He has participated in many local service organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties, United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, where he served as a Board Member, he volunteered at the Knights of Columbus Soup Kitchen, served as a PTO officer and coaches soccer and baseball. Jim resides in Winchester with his wife and four children.

Lawrence P. Vance

Lawrence P. Vance

Lawrence P. Vance joined the firm of Buchbauer & McGuire, P.C. in January 2007.

Mr. Vance left a career of law enforcement in 1996 to study law. He interned in the Attorney General’s Office of Virginia and was a summer clerk for the Honorable Justice Lawrence Koontz of the Virginia Supreme Court. Prior to joining Buchbauer & McGuire, P.C., Mr. Vance was a principal in the firm of Vance & Smalls, P.C. in Winchester and an associate in the Law Offices of Franklin R. Blatt, P.C. in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Currently, Mr. Vance has a general practice with a primary focus in family law and non-bankruptcy creditor collections. He has served for the last three years as the Bench-Bar Committee Chairman of the Winchester-Frederick County Bar Association.

In his spare time, Mr. Vance enjoys woodworking and playing hockey. He resides in Stephens City with his wife and three children.
